Y2 Weekly Update: Term 3 Week 1

English	This week we completed some holiday recounts as well as looking at ‘tongue twisters’ and alliteration. The children enjoyed reading, exploring and creating their very own tongue twisters.	Next week we will continue by looking at Silly poems - always a favourite with the students.
Math	This week in Maths we’ve been locating, ordering and comparing numbers 101-200. We’ve also been adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers using the column method.	Use doubles and number bonds to add three 1-digit numbers; use number facts to 10 and 20 in number stories; find complements to multiples of 10; understand subtraction as difference and find this by counting up; find small differences either side of a multiple of 10
Inquiry	We began our topic of inquiry into how products are made. This falls under the topic of ‘Organisation’ and the students were asked to make questions about what they wanted to learn about how products are made, as well as to demonstrate what they already know.	Next week, we will be finding out more and looking at different ways to research how products are made. This will include looking and comparing products, how they are made, what processes are involved and what materials are used.
Art	This week we created some lovely water colour paintings of the students’ holidays.	We will begin a design and technology project looking at aeroplanes and we’ll work towards building our own model aeroplane.

Art - holiday water colouring

This week we decided to mark the end of our exciting holiday adventures by creating some wonderful water colouring pictures displaying the favourite part of our adventures. The children were carefully mixing the water colours and ensuring that they were holding the brushes correctly and were careful with their brush strokes.

Welcome back!

Dear Parents and students,

I would like to wish you a belated welcome back to the new term. This will be the final term in Year 2 and after this term the students will begin their adventures in Key Stage 2 as part of the bigger children in Primary. After discussing this with the students I have asked them to demonstrate their maturity and readiness for joining KS2 by being organised, independent and sensible with respects to themselves, others and towards their learning. I hope that parents will join me in emphasizing this to the children as well as we look to finishing Year 2 with a bang and with Year 3 in mind for the future.

I would also like to extend a great congratulations to all the students who participated in last term's Ascot Idol. It was difficult for Kru B and myself to stay involved and to not get carried away cheering for our many students who entered, we were all very proud of their achievements and contributions. Well done!

Maths - more than, less than

This week we began by recapping the symbols for 'more than' and 'less than' - < and >. The children were comfortable in their knowledge of what to do and how to use the symbols correctly.

Y2 Weekly Update: Week 11 2016

English	We continued with our non-chronological reports in literacy this week. They’re almost finished, we just have to add the finishing touches such as adding pictures.	End of term reading and writing assessments.
Math	This week we revisited multiplication and arrays. We also introduced the 3 and 4 times tables and used arrays to solve them. We found out that multiplication and division are inverse operations and began to write division sums.	End of term maths assessments.
Humanities	This week we looked at Victorian clothes. We identified ways in which they are different from how we dress now and discussed the differences between clothes for the rich and poor.	To understand differences between school in 19th century and now.
Science	Last week we were investigating what a fair test is and investigating ice cubes and how they vary when melting in different locations.	End of unit review
Art	This week’s art lesson was used to design the front cover of our non-chronological report books from literacy.	Songkran art.

Y2 Weekly Update: Week 10 2016

                                                                                                                

	This Week	Next Week
English	This week we began our work on non-chronological reports. The children were tasked with identifying the features and to plan their own non-chronological report which they will begin next week.	Continue working on non-chronological reports.
Math	This week in maths we recapped quarter hours on the clock and then moved on to units of time. We learnt about the 12 months in the year and practiced an easy way to remember how many days each month. We also related units of time such as saying 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week.	Revise 2, 5 and 10 times-tables; revise arrays and hops on the number line; multiply by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10; arrange objects into arrays and write the corresponding multiplications; make links between grouping and multiplication to begin to show division; write divisions as multiplications with holes in and use the ÷ sign
Humanities	This week we looked at pictures of toys from the 19th and early 20th centuries and thought about how they might be similar or different to toys nowadays.	To understand differences between clothing for the rich and poor in 19th century and now.
Science	We continued our exploration of materials and this week involved looking at materials and what happens when they are exposed to heat. This involved melting cheese, chocolate and other fun items.	to explore melting ice using appropriate senses to use their knowledge about what makes ice melt to plan what to do
Art	We made thaumatropes, toys with pictures on each side which merge together when spun between the hands.	To design the front cover of our non-chronological report.

Humanities - looking at toys from a long time ago

We continued our inquiry into life a long time ago by having an in depth look at toys. This children had to look at photos of old toys and comment on certain aspects of the toys - for example, how was it used? What can we say about the materials required to build it? and so on.
