Y2 Weekly Update: Week 9 2016

English	We continued our good work of really looking at the stars and constellations. The children had to design their own constellation in order to collaborate with other children and create a group story.	Begin our next topic on non chronological reports
Math	This week we’ve been learning about multiplication. We started by counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and writing these as repeated addition sums, such as 2+2+2+2=8. Repeated addition can be very long to write, so we found out that multiplication will give us the same answer. We know that the first number in a multiplication sums tells us how many groups there are and the second number tells us how many objects in each group. For example, 4x2 means that there are 4 baskets and each have 2 eggs in. The total is 8 eggs.	Tell the time to the nearest quarter of an hour using analogue and digital clocks; understand the relationship between seconds, minutes and hours and use a tally chart; interpret and complete a pictogram or block graph where one block or symbol represents one or two things.
Humanities	This week we looked at a lot of pictures of items from long ago and more recently. The students sorted the pictures and discussed why they thought the items were old or new. They asked some questions to help them, such as ‘What is it made from?’ and ‘Have I seen one of these before?’.	To understand differences between children toys and clothing in 19 th century and now.
Science	This week we investigated Materials and their ability to change shape - this involved twisting, bending and squashing lots of different materials to understand their properties further.	that materials often change when they are heated to make observations and simple comparisons to construct a table to record observations
Art	We made Victorian paper doll puppets.	Making Victorian thaumatropes and spinning tops.
PSHE	We watched the 5th episode of the Class Dojo ‘Big Ideas’ series and discussed how challenges help us to learn.	We’ll be thinking about being mindful of our thoughts and how we can be present without worrying about what’s happened in the past or what might be happening later on.

English	This week, we looked at Poetry again, this time with an emphasis on how adjectives and similes were used. This involves looking at poems about the stars and creating our own poem about a star.	to continue to look at poetry about stars
Math	This week, we revised doubling and halving numbers. We then moved on to find half of a shape and used the fraction ½ to show this. We introduced the fractions ¼ and ⅓ and identified these amounts in shapes. Finally, we used mixed numbers to show whole amounts and fractions, such as 2 ½ slices of bread.	Count in 2s, 5s and 10s to solve multiplication problems and find specified multiples; introduce the × sign; record the 2, 5 and 10 times-tables; investigate multiplications with the same answer; write multiplications to go with arrays, rotate arrays to show they are commutative
Humanities	This week, we introduced our topic ‘Civilisations’ and discussed what the students thought schools and people looked like from a long time ago.	Can understand differences between children, schools and homes in 19 th century and now.
Science	We began our unit on sorting and changing materials. We had a carousel of activities to cover sorting manmade and natural materials, the properties of materials and how materials are used for certain jobs and how they have been altered for their jobs (e.g. painted, polished, carved etc)	that objects made from some materials can be altered by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching to describe ways of making materials or objects change, using appropriate vocabulary to explore materials using appropriate senses and making observations and simple comparisons
Art	We completed our ‘snapshots of spring’ - which involved the children drawing some of the interesting aspects of their half term holiday, such as their favourite memory, something they ate, somewhere they went and so on.	creating Victorian paper dolls

English	We completed activities related to our international day countries and a big write assessment.	our unit on poetry ‘really looking’
Math	This week Year 2 have been learning about rounding 2-digit numbers to the nearest 10. They’ve also been estimating amounts by choosing a range and then counting in 10s to find the exact amount.	Revise doubles and corresponding halves to 15; find half of odd and even numbers to 30; Revise and recognise 1/2s, 1/4s, 1/3s and 2/3s of shapes; place 1/2s on a number line; count in 1/2s and 1/4s; understand and write mixed numbers.
Humanities	We completed activities related to our international day countries.	Year two will be starting a new topic on ‘Civilisations’. We’ll be thinking about differences between the 19th century and now and also constructing some questions to ask grandparents.
Science	We concluded our work on the topic of forces and movement by evaluating the data from our investigation and drawing some simple conclusions.	begin our topic on grouping and changing materials
Art	We completed activities related to our international day countries.	Looking at Victorian fashion by dressing victorian paper dolls.

Learning about Peru

This week, the children have been so enthusiastic with learning about Peru. We began with some simple fact finding activities and then went on to an ambitious art project designing and making golden Inca masks.

Class assembly

Dear Parents,

Apologies for the delay, but here are some photos from the class assembly we did recently, the children were fantastic and spoke confidently and with clarity! Everybody was so impressed. Literacy book cover redesign

Last week, we made Julia Donaldson book covers. The children had to include the features of a good book cover while redesigning the front cover of their favourite Julia Donaldson book.
