English
This week, we began our unit on ‘Instructions’ - the children were beginning to understand the features of instructions such as bossy words, and how they are organised. We even managed to follow instructions to make bread and then proceed to create our own bread making instructions.
  • Book week activities centred around our favourite book.
Math
This week we’ve been using 100 Squares to add and subtract 10 from 2 digit numbers. We’ve been thinking about how 2 digit numbers are made from 10’s and 1’s and used bead strings to help us see how many groups of 10 and how many 1’s are in a number.
  • Add 10, 20 and 30 to any 2-digit number
  • Subtract 10, 20, 30 from any 2-digit number (>30)
  • Add 11, 21, 12 and 22 to any 2-digit number
  • Subtract 11, 12, 21, 22, from any number by counting back in 10s and adjusting
Humanities
This week we looked at pictures from seasides in the past and asked questions about them. We learnt about how holidays to the beach were different many years ago.
  • To identify similarities and differences between beach holidays now and in the past.
Science
We have been exploring our local environment to discover what sort of plants and animals we could find. Some attention was also given to how we can explore safely and how to avoid damaging plants and animals.
  • that there are differences between local habitats
  • to make predictions about the animals and plants found in different local habitats and to investigate these
  • to use drawings to present results and make comparisons saying whether their predictions were supported
Art
This week we thought about how a viewfinder works on a camera and how we can use this to zoom in on interesting sections of a scene. We can use the zoom to focus in on detail.
  • To use a viewfinder to draw a detailed section of a picture.

Halloween

Last week we celebrated Halloween with a fancy dress day on Friday. We also looked at the origins of Halloween and had some Halloween party games too.

Last week we celebrated Halloween with some fun activities. A highlight was when the children were asked to create monsters and select the appropriate adjectives for their monsters - words such as 'big, scary, etc'.

We began the week with writing about our holidays, before moving onto Halloween related activities, such as creating our own monsters and Halloween poems.
  • Begin our unit on Instructions
Math
This week we’ve been learning all about the position of objects in a group and how to use ordinal numbers to find positions. We’ve also been using the vocabulary ‘before’, ‘after’, ‘between’, ‘first’ and ‘last’.

  • Understand place value using 10B and 1B coins; find and record all possible amounts using 10B and 1B coins

Humanities
This week we introduced our new topic ‘Seasides in the Past’ and thought about the activities that we like to do at the seaside.
  • To ask questions about how a seaside holiday was different in the past.
Science
This week, we finished off our unit of health and growth by discussing the importance and safety regarding medicines. This also included understanding which adults can give us medicine and when do we need to take medicine.
  • that there are different kinds of plants and animals in the immediate environment
  • to treat animals and the environment with care and sensitivity
  • to recognise hazards in working with soil
  • to observe and make a record of animals and plants found
  • to present results in a table
Art
During Art this week we began learning our Christmas production songs. We also had some time to draw a picture of our holiday.

This week, we have continued our work on poetry by looking at shape poems. These are poems that are written in the layout of what they are about. So clouds poems will be in the shape of a cloud for example. We also have our big writing assessment on our weekend news, as well as the writing about our trip to Kidzania.
  • Half term holiday writing and finishing off our unit on poetry.
Math
This week we used bead strings and number lines to order numbers. We also placed numbers on a landmarked number line and compared them using the > (greater than) and < (less than) symbols.

This week we peer reviewed our island models, thinking about what looks good and what we could improve.

  • To understand that our holidays are often timed around celebrations or festivals.
Science
Linking in with our trip to Kidzania, the children had the opportunity to role play being a paramedic or a surgeon, or to discuss how to look after animals.
  • that medicines can be dangerous if we take them without consulting parents or doctors
  • recognise hazards and risks in
  • medicines and how to avoid these
  • communicate information about the safe use of medicines
Art
We made an underwater scene by weaving pieces of different materials through a loom and then decorating it with sequins and fish.

Maths - sorting shapes using carroll diagrams

We continued our work on shapes by sorting them using Carroll diagrams - the children had to look at the features of the 2D shape and sort them according to a strict criteria.

This week, we began our unit on poetry and learn about rhyming words through a variety of activities. We then had a close look at rhyming couplets and tried to make some of our very own.
  • continue to look at poems - shape poems, acrostic poems
Math
This week we continued learning about 2D shapes. We found out about tessellation and how some shapes fit together without any gaps. We also made our own tessellation patterns on the computer. We also used Carroll diagrams to sort 2D shapes by their properties and tried sorting other items such as fruit and vegetable too.
  • To use the signs < and > to compare numbers to 100.
  • To find 1 more and 10 more on a 100 square.
Humanities
This week we looked at the differences between Bangkok and an island and discussed how we felt about them. The children recorded what they liked and disliked in groups.

Science
This week we discussed what babies need and analysed the differences between babies and toddlers. This involved discussing what they could do and what they needed help with.
  • Trip to Kidzania
Art
We painted our island models, thinking carefully about which colours we needed and where.
PSHE
We learnt about the Indian festival of Diwali in preparation for the Y3S assembly on Friday, in which they gave us a report of what happens during the festival.
