Y2 Weekly Update: Term 2 Week 3

English	We began looking at the parts of a story and using a story mountain to assist with this. First the students had to discuss familiar stories and match the events to the relevant section on the story mountain. We also had a close look at adjectives used in familiar stories and why.	We will plan a story using a story mountain format and begin to write some really epic stories.
Math	This week we used the column method of adding to add 2-digit numbers. We started by adding two 2-digit numbers without regrouping and then we moved on to adding 1 and 2-digit numbers with regrouping. We understand that regrouping is necessary if the sum of two digits is greater than 10. We can carry over the 10s digit and add it to the other digits in the 10s column.	Measure weight using standard or uniform non-standard units; draw a block graph where one square represents two units; weigh items using 100g weights using scales marked in multiples of 1kg or 100g; measure capacity using uniform non-standard units; measure capacity in litres and in multiples of 100ml.
Inquiry	This week we began an in depth look at how a product is made. The class were put into groups and had to find information about their given product and represent this on a poster.	Next week we will be ‘going further’ - the students will have to decide the next step of their inquiry and which aspects they would like to focus on.
Art	This week we continued our work on aeroplanes - this ranged from including more practise at drawing aeroplanes with the correct perspective and also making other aeroplane art.	We’ll continue our aeroplane project by creating more aeroplane art.
Notices and Events	Letters confirming students for the science fair were given out Friday - the date for the Science fair is 13th May

Inquiry - investigating a product from start to finish

This week the students were put into groups and tasked with producing a poster that clearly outline all the steps for how a given product was made. These ranged from cars to T shirts to chocolate. The students were very collaborative and impressed me with their efforts to work together.

Aeroplane art

Continuing our Art project on airplanes, the students had to make some airplane art that featured the sky at sundown time. This involved using water colours with a graded wash effect to create an authentic sky. It was tricky but the students managed well.

Inquiry learning

This week we continued our inquiry based learning about products and the students demonstrated a keen eagerness to make decisions about their learning for themselves. They were productive and focused on the variety of tasks and generating some very interesting questions.

English	This week we continued our work on Nonsense poems and the children had a delightful time coming up with silly ideas for their poetry. They had to make a group poem about the end of assembly where the children moved in the same manner as the teacher’s name - for example ‘Miss Bee’s class buzzed away’	We will finish our work on poems and begin some story writing
Math	This week in Maths we’ve been using doubles and number bonds to add 3 numbers together. We’ve also been finding the difference between numbers and recording the sums as addition and subtraction: 47+?=50 50-47=?	Add and subtract 1-digit numbers to and from 2-digit numbers Subtract 2-digit numbers by counting back in 10s and 1s Add two 2-digit numbers by counting in 10s, then adding 1s Add 2-digit numbers using 10p and 1p coins (using partitioning) with totals less than 100 Add 2-digit numbers using place-value cards (using partitioning) with totals more than 100
Inquiry	This week’s focus has been on ‘finding out’ so we’ve been doing lots of activities to explore where products come from and how they are made through a production process. We’ve been watching videos on ‘How It’s Made’, reading books, creating flow charts, investigating materials and discussing our ideas.	Next week we begin ‘sorting out’ where we review all the information we have gathered and start to make connections or conclusions about it.
Art	We started our aeroplane project by learning how to draw them. We followed step by step instructions to do this which you can find on our class blog.	We’ll give each other feedback on our aeroplane drawings and have another go to see if we can improve them.
Notices and Events	Please return the Scholastic orders by Wednesday 4th May with the correct money in a sealed named envelope.

Science fair proposals

Dear Parents,

We have been discussing the Science fair on 13th May with the class and students who are interested in joining have taken the letter home. The letters were for the children to outline their idea for the Science which Mr Renie can then approve.

Please be advised that if you child has expressed an interest in the Science Fair and have discussed it at home with you, they must bring the letter back to me by tomorrow (29th May Friday). 

I would like to thank Parents for their support with this matter and I am certainly looking forward to the Science Fair as it was one of the highlights of the year last time.
