Island transport

This week we used our teamwork skills to decide what modes of transport we would use on an island for certain trips. Discussion and teamwork formed a very important part of this activity.

English	We began our topic on comic books and looked in depth at one of the key features of comic books - Superheroes! The children designed their very own superhero including an origin story to prepare for next week’s work.	to create our own comic books
Maths	We've been learning about number bonds to 20 and doubling numbers to 20. We found out that doubling is simply adding a number to itself. If a number has 2 digits, we can double the 10's number first and then the 1's number.	Place value in 2 digit numbers Add 1-digit to 2-digit numbers, bridging 10 and using known facts Subtract 1-digit from 2-digit numbers including 2-digit multiples of 10 by counting back Use inverse relationship between addition and subtraction to solve missing number problems
Humanities	we continued our work on islands.	To use 4 senses (see, hear, smell & feel) to compare an island location with a city location.
Science	We continued looking at the food we eat in terms of diet. The children had to consider what food are healthy and unhealthy and what it means to have a balanced diet.	that we need exercise to stay healthy to make and record observations and to make simple comparisons
Art	We have created our very treasure maps - ensuring that all the key features of islands are present, as well as some of the fun fictional features. We’ve even tea stained them to make them look old!	Plan and design our island models.

Notices and Events	Next week is the Muslim holiday, Eid Al-Adha. We'll be learning about about the celebration to develop our understanding of other cultures.

English	We’ve been planning our own story with a familiar setting by creating our own characters and setting and planning using a storyboard with pictures and sentences.	continuing our work on stories with a familiar settings with a focus on superheroes!
Math	We’ve been practicing our mental recall of addition facts to 10 and beginning to understand that addition can be done in any order (1+9=10 & 9+1=10). We’ve also found out that addition and subtraction are inverse operations and that subtraction can be used to solve missing number addition problems.	Recall number facts to 20; number pairs (4 to 20) and bonds to 10 and 20 Begin to write word problems Double numbers to 20, including partitioning teen numbers, and find related halves
Humanities	We’ve been thinking about different modes of transport and found out about the three main routes of travel: by land, air and sea. We’ve considered appropriate methods of transport on small islands and how we’d get between places of interest.	continuing our good work on Islands
Science	We’ve learnt about the 5 food groups and carried out a survey to find our favourite foods in each group.	That sometimes we eat a lot of some foods and not very much of others
Art	We drew our friends faces using the model we learnt last week. We looked at the shape of their faces so that we could use the appropriate proportions.	To design a fantasy island treasure map including features such as ‘x marks the spot’.
PSHE	We are learning about how our classroom and school is a community. We already know our friends quite well but we played a game called ‘Hedgehogs’ to see if we could identify the ‘hidden’ person.	new beginnings PSHE scheme

Literacy - stories with familiar settings

This week we continued our good work on stories with familiar settings - one task was to discuss other familiar settings and in a group create a mind map of ideas. The teamwork demonstrated by all was very encouraging.

Maths - numbers to 100, estimation

This week, we continued our good work on numbers to 100, and spent a lesson working on our estimation skills. The children were allocated into groups and asked to estimate how many objects were in a bowl. They had to record everyone's estimate and then count by grouping in tens to see who had the closest estimation.

English	We have begun our topic ‘stories with familiar settings’. We had a close look at the story ‘ella’s school trip’ and the children had tremendous fun using puppets to retell the story in their own words.	planning and creating our own story with a familiar setting
Math	We have been comparing and ordering sets of  numbers to 100. We’ve been using 100 squares to find numbers bigger than or smaller than a given number. We’ve also been practicing counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s up to 100.	Order and compare 2-digit numbers and say a number between. Use language: equal to, more than, less/fewer than, most, least to find bonds of numbers up to 10. Use inverse relationship between addition and subtraction to solve missing number problems Know the multiple of 10 bonds to 100 and use to derive the multiple of 5 bonds to 100
Humanities	We continued our good work on ‘Islands’ by having a look at Koh Samui and understanding the concept of man-made and natural features.	understanding the types of transport used to travel around islands.
Science	This week we were learning about why humans need to drink and eat to survive. This children discussed what would happen and recorded their ideas on a chart before checking what would happen using a computer simulation.	that we eat different kinds of food to collect information and to present results as a block graph
Art	This week we began to learn how to sketch our faces and bodies, ensuring that we consider the proportions and shapes carefully.	observational drawing and sketching of our friend’s faces
PSHE	We’ve been getting to know our classmates better by thinking of questions to ask each other, such as ‘what’s your favourite colour?’	new beginnings PSHE scheme

Science

This week we looked at what humans need to live and be healthy - the children recorded their ideas on what would happen if we had no food, or no water on a simple chart in groups.
