Y2 Weekly Update: Week 2 2015

English	We have begun our topic ‘stories with familiar settings’. We had a close look at the story ‘ella’s school trip’ and the children had tremendous fun using puppets to retell the story in their own words.	planning and creating our own story with a familiar setting
Math	We have been comparing and ordering sets of  numbers to 100. We’ve been using 100 squares to find numbers bigger than or smaller than a given number. We’ve also been practicing counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s up to 100.	Order and compare 2-digit numbers and say a number between. Use language: equal to, more than, less/fewer than, most, least to find bonds of numbers up to 10. Use inverse relationship between addition and subtraction to solve missing number problems Know the multiple of 10 bonds to 100 and use to derive the multiple of 5 bonds to 100
Humanities	We continued our good work on ‘Islands’ by having a look at Koh Samui and understanding the concept of man-made and natural features.	understanding the types of transport used to travel around islands.
Science	This week we were learning about why humans need to drink and eat to survive. This children discussed what would happen and recorded their ideas on a chart before checking what would happen using a computer simulation.	that we eat different kinds of food to collect information and to present results as a block graph
Art	This week we began to learn how to sketch our faces and bodies, ensuring that we consider the proportions and shapes carefully.	observational drawing and sketching of our friend’s faces
PSHE	We’ve been getting to know our classmates better by thinking of questions to ask each other, such as ‘what’s your favourite colour?’	new beginnings PSHE scheme

Science

This week we looked at what humans need to live and be healthy - the children recorded their ideas on what would happen if we had no food, or no water on a simple chart in groups.

First week back

Dear Parents,

We had a great first week back at school, and I am delighted with how the children have responded to their new class and year group. We have covered many different things this week so please enjoy a variety of photos from this week's lessons.

Y2 Weekly Update: Week 1 2015

                                                                                                                

	This Week	Next Week
English	We had a good first week learning about our friends and new classrooms. This included discussing the classroom rules and routines, as well as fun facts about each other and our teachers.	stories with familiar settings - the children will study a story taking place somewhere they have likely to have visited in real life. We will be discussing aspects of the story such as characters and places.
Math	We were learning about numbers to 20, particularly how to order, read and write them. This also included how to write the numbers in their word form. We also recapped odd and even numbers and what they are.	Estimate and count a number of objects up to 100; locate numbers on 0−100 beaded lines and 1−100 squares; compare pairs of numbers and find a number in between; order three numbers, order 2-digit numbers.
Humanities	Islands - an introduction, the children discussed the concept that an island is land that is totally surrounded by water.	A close look at a Thai island - we will have a look at a famous Thai island and observe and discuss the features of the island.
Science	We have been recapping the parts of the body by labelling bodies and faces. We have learnt some new vocabulary such as ‘dimples’ and ‘freckles’.	• that humans need water and food to stay alive • to record information in drawing and charts • that there are many different foods
Art	We have made some self portraits using collages for the background.	Sketching people - we will begin to learn about sketching and how to develop our pencil skills.
PSHE	We have spent time discussing and reminding ourselves of the expectations for school and play time. We also discussed what makes a good friend.	We will continue to discuss new beginnings and the expectations in our new class and year group.
Notices and Events	Music - Year 2 will need recorders starting next week for their music lessons with Mr. Bryer. Please check the timetables in the back of your child’s contact book. Recorders can be kept in class to ensure they do not get lost throughout the week. Swimming - Please ensure that if your child is missing their swimming lesson that parents inform the class teacher with a note in the contact book.

KS1 start of term reminders

New staff

We would like to welcome a new addition to the teaching staff, Miss. Chloe Kniveton, who will be working in Year 1. She is excited by the challenges ahead and ready to bring her skills and knowledge to help develop the KS1 team.

Homework

This will begin as of Monday next week, as we will use this week to get the children settled into their new classrooms and routines.

Below is a table which outlines which day your child will require their PE/ swimming kit at school:

After school pick up - In Key stage 1, please remember that all children who are not attending ECAs and have not been picked up will wait at the pick up area next to the front gate.

Sun hat reminder

Dear Parents,

Please can all parents ensure that each child has a  sun hat at school. It should be clearly marked with a name and can be purchased from the school uniform shop. If the uniform shop has run out of stock, then a suitable hat from home can be used until a school sun hat can be purchased.

We will be stressing the importance of wearing a sun hat and avoiding skin damage from the sun to the children. Any child without a hat will have to sit out at playtime or play in the shaded area which is not nearly as fun as running around the whole of the playground!
