Guest Speaker

Today Mrs Asher came to speak to us about her culture. We learnt her Grandfather came here from China.
She taught us about Chinese New Year and the moon festival.
We learnt that she lived in Canada for two years when she was at school and would visit her grandparents for one month of the year when she was little. They lived a very different lifestyle in a rural part of Thailand.

Weekly Update

Y3 Weekly Update: 19th September - 23rd September 2016

This Week

Next Week

English
In English class we have begun learning about Non-chronological reports. We learnt that non means not, chrono means time, and logical means order. Therefore, a non-chronological report means not in time order. We looked at the different features of a non-chronological reports and discussed how these are different to the features of a story and other fiction texts. Next, we went to the library to see if we could find non-chronological reports in the non-fiction section. Afterwards, we drew a text map for the features of a non-chronological report to show what we had remembered. At the end of this English unit we will write our own non-chronological reports.
Space Case
Next week it is Book Week and we have a space theme. We will be reading a book called ‘Thad Goes to the Moon’.  We will be looking at characters, settings and events throughout the week as well as answering questions based on the text to improve our comprehension skills.
Maths
In Maths, we have been learning to:
  • To read a yearly calendar
  • To know the difference between a day and a date
  • To tell time to the quarter hour on analogue and digital clocks e.g. quarter to 6, 6:45
  • To tell time to 5 minutes on analogue and digital clocks e.g. five past 4, 4:05
  • To write digital time for 5 minute intervals e.g. 5:45, 6:20, 7:50, 9:55, 10:05
Subtraction
Next week we will be working with number lines in order to compare 2 and 3 digit numbers. We will also be using predicting methods to estimate calculations. Finally, we will be learning new techniques to use when solving word problems.
Unit of Inquiry
Going Further
This past week we studied a variety of countries in greater detail. This allowed us to use our ever growing ICT skill set when researching. Non chronological reports were also made using the information gathered in our researching sessions.
Book Week
Next week we are taking a break from our unit of enquiry work to spend some time looking at space as part of our book week theme.
Notices and Events
There will be no Literacy homework again next week as we would like the children to complete their competition entries, however there will still be Abacus and the daily reading diary to complete.
The deadline for the Extreme Reading and Picture Book competitions is Wednesday 28th.
Please remember that the children are able to come to school in fancy dress on Friday 30th.
